What are my options if I am about to turn 18 and want to take drivers ed?

The process for getting your driver license in Texas is different if you are under or over 18 years old. Because of this, students who turn 18 while taking Parent Taught Drivers Ed or who are beginning the Drivers Ed process and are nearing their 18th birthday have a few options:

Scenario 1: Turning 18 while taking Parent Taught Drivers Ed

  • Option 1 – Complete Parent Taught Drivers Ed
    • If you are almost finished with your course and behind the wheel hours, you can complete your Parent Taught Drivers Ed or Instructor Taught Drivers Ed even if you have turned 18 – you’ll be on the road in no time!
    • If you turn 18 after getting your permit, you will need to renew it at the DPS on your birthday.
  • Option 2 – Purchase Adult Drivers Ed
    • If you are itching to get on the road, a faster option is to purchase Adult Drivers Ed and take that course instead!
    • The course is only $56 and takes 6 hours to complete.
    • Another perk? No behind the wheel hours required! It’s a speedy and affordable option.
    • Please note, this course cannot be purchased until you turn 18!

Scenario 2: About to turn 18 when enrolling in drivers ed

  • Option 1 – Enroll in Parent Taught Drivers Ed or Instructor Taught Drivers Ed
    • If you are under 18, you are eligible to complete Parent Taught Drivers Ed or Instructor Taught Drivers Ed, even if you will turn 18 during the course!
    • Note that even though you are 18, you will still need to hold your permit for 1 year and complete 44 behind the wheel hours.
    • If you turn 18 after getting your permit, you will need to renew it at the DPS on your birthday.
  • Option 2 – Purchase Adult Drivers Ed on your 18th Birthday
    • If you would like to take our Adult Drivers Ed course, you can purchase the course and set up an account!
    • Please note, this course cannot be purchased until you turn 18!
