How do I get a hardship license?

A hardship license–also known as a minor restricted driver license (MRDL)–is a Texas driver license that you can get before you’re 16 years old or without holding your permit for a minimum of 6 months. In order to obtain a hardship license, you must show proof of why you need to drive as soon as possible.

You can apply for a hardship license if you meet all of the following:

  1. You are at least 15 years old.
  2. You have completed all 32 hours of Aceable’s Parent Taught Drivers Ed course and have received a Certificate of Completion from us.
  3. You have completed 44 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction and practice.
  4. You have a qualifying hardship.

Qualifying hardships are:

  • Economic need (Example: You need to go to work to support your family, but no one can drive you to work)
  • Death-related emergency
  • Sickness/illness/disability of family members (physician’s statement required)
  • Enrollment in a Vocational Education Program* (certification from school required)

*Vocational Education Programs include classes that require you to drive to a location as part of an internship or training program. For example, if you were in a health care internship class and needed to go to the hospital to learn from the nurses and doctors there, but you did not have anyone to drive you, you would meet this hardship.

If you are approved for a hardship license, it will expire on your next birthday.

To apply for a hardship license, bring all of the following to your DPS:

  1. All the paperwork and documents needed to meet regular licensing requirements
  2. A parent or legal guardian
  3. A completed MRDL application (also available at any driver license office)

  3. California Drivers Ed, Ohio Drivers Ed, Texas Instructor Taught Drivers Ed, and Texas Defensive Driving:

I see multiple charges from Aceable.

We can definitely look into that for you! The reason you see multiple charges may either be that you bought the course more than once, you may have downloaded the wrong app and bought a course you don’t need, OR we have charged you for the course and then for expedited shipping that you selected at the end of the course.

If you accidentally bought more than once, contact our Customer Experience Heroes to get this taken care of!

If we’ve charged you for shipping and the certificate has been mailed out already, unfortunately, that cannot be refunded since the service has already been provided to you. But hey, you got your certificate pretty fast, right?

I failed the test and now I am permanently locked out of your course.

There are some situations where Aceable cannot issue refunds though due to state requirements that we can’t get around. Some states require you to repurchase the course if you fail a level assessment or a final course assessment after a certain number of attempts.

Here are the courses that fall under this situation:

  • Texas Defensive Driving
    • If you fail the same level assessment three times, Texas requires you to start over from the beginning and repurchase. The passing score is 75% (must get at least 3 out of 4 questions right to pass).
  • Texas Instructor Taught Drivers Ed
    • If you fail the final exam three times, Texas requires you to start over from the beginning and repurchase. The passing score is 70% (must get at least 35 out of 50 questions right to pass).
  • Florida Knowledge Exam
    • If you fail the knowledge exam, you can retake it two more times, but you must repurchase for each retake. Alternatively, you can take the exam in person at the DMV for $10. The passing score is 80% (must get at least 40 out of 50 questions right to pass).
  • Illinois Adult Drivers Ed
    • If you fail the final exam two times, Illinois requires you to start over from the beginning and repurchase. The passing score is 75% (must get at least 15 out of 20 questions right to pass).
  • Ohio Drivers Ed
    • If you fail the final exam three times, Ohio requires you to start over from the beginning and repurchase. The passing score is 75% (must get at least 38 out of 50 questions right to pass). You must wait 24 hours between each retake.

How does the referral program work?

Our referral program is only available for Texas Parent Taught Drivers Ed and California Drivers Ed.

All you have to do is share your unique referral link with your friends and family, they sign up with your link and get a discount, and you get a referral bonus through PayPal for each person that signs up for either of the two courses. If you prefer, you also have the option to donate your referral bonus to a charity.

Below are more details about the differences in the referral programs for the two courses:

Course: Your friend’s discount: You earn:
California Drivers Ed 20% $10
Texas Parent Taught Drivers Ed 25% $15

How do I refer a friend or family member?

  1. Head to your course’s referral program (Texas or California) and enter your email address and name.
  2. Share your unique referral link on the next page with friends and family.* They must purchase through your link to get a special discount and for you to get your referral bonus.

*Your referral link expires after 30 days.

How do I check or collect my referral credit?

  1.  Go to your course’s referral program (Texas or California) and enter the email address and name that you used when you first signed up for the referral program.
  2.  Click on “track your rewards” in the top right-hand corner of the next page.  Afterwards, you’ll see a screen where you can track how much referral credit you have and select how you want it paid out (PayPal or charity).**

**PayPal usually pays out ReferralCandy customers once a month.

I haven't gotten my receipt yet.

If you haven’t gotten a receipt, it’s possible that you signed up with the wrong email. You can definitely contact our Customer Experience Heroes so we can look for your purchase and email you a receipt. If your email turns out to be incorrect, we can also fix that up for you.

I have purchased but it's still asking me to pay.

The number one reason that this generally happens is when you purchase under a different email than the account it needs to be under. Contact our Customer Experience Heroes to get this fixed.

Sometimes, that might not be the reason, but either way, let us know and we’ll help you get this all sorted out.

I'm having trouble purchasing.

First things to check:

  1. Have you double-checked and triple-checked that you have typed in your card or PayPal information correctly?
  2. Do you have enough funds in your account? (Check your bank account!)

If the page has trouble loading or is loading forever, try the following troubleshooting steps:

  1. If you are on Internet Explorer, we highly encourage you to switch to a different Internet browser such as Google Chrome, Firefox, or Safari. Internet Explorer is extremely outdated software that is no longer maintained by Microsoft and causes issues like this to happen.
  2. Refresh your page.
  3. Hard-refresh your page by pressing Control+Shift+R (Windows) or Command+Shift+R (Mac).

If all else fails, you are 100% more than welcome to contact our Customer Experience Heroes to make your payment over the phone.
