Taking the Course

How long is the course?

It is 13 levels long and meets the state’s 32-hour classroom instruction requirement. This course has page timers to ensure that it will take a minimum of 32 hours to complete the course.

You should only work on the course for a maximum of 2 hours per day, meaning that it should take a minimum of 16 days to complete the course.

Does the program expire?

No. You can take as long as you need to finish up. Even if you turn 18 in the middle of the process, you can still complete the instructor taught drivers ed program – you just need to renew your permit on your 18th birthday at the DPS in order to be able to get your license under instructor taught drivers ed still.

What if I fail the DPS written test?

If you fail, you can take the test again 24 hours later. There is no limit on how many times you can take the written test and you don’t have to pay again to take it more than once.

What happens if I fail a level assessment?

There are 13 levels in the course. At the end of Levels 2-13 are level assessments consisting of 10 questions. The questions will be a mix of multiple-choice and true/false questions. You must score at least 70% or better (at least 7 out of 10 questions correct) in order to pass and go on to the next level.

If you fail a level assessment, you can take it again. There is no limit on how many times you can take a level assessment and you don’t have to pay again to take a level assessment more than once.

What happens if I fail the final exam?

After you complete the level assessment at the end of Level 13, you’ll need to do the Course Assessment. This assessment consists of 50 questions. The questions will be a mix of multiple-choice and true/false questions. You must score at least 70% or better (at least 35 out of 50 questions correct) in order to pass and receive a DE-964 Certificate of Completion from Aceable.

You have three chances to pass the Course Assessment. After failing the Course Assessment three times, the state requires that you repurchase and restart the course from the very beginning.

Why do I have to answer identity security questions?

The state of Texas requires Aceable to verify the identity of students taking the course. We do this by asking you a series of identity security questions based on information in your Aceable Student Profile. This system is made to ensure that the person who signed up for the course is actually the one taking it.

You’ll be asked these identity security questions at various points throughout the course. If you fail 18 questions (which we doubt you will since these questions are all about you!), the state of Texas requires us to lock you out of your account. Unfortunately, this is a state requirement we have to follow.

What do I do if I’m locked out of the course?

If you are locked out due to failing 18 security questions, just contact Aceable and we’ll get you unlocked after some additional verification. We’ll work with you to make sure you can continue your course ASAP.

If you are locked out from failing the final exam, unfortunately this means that you must restart the course from the beginning and pay for the course again. This is a state requirement so it is not something that Aceable can pull strings or make exceptions for. Contact Aceable so we can reset your account.

Why am I getting two certificates?

One of these certificates is the DE-964 Permit Certificate. You’ll present this at the DPS when you get your permit.

*Your Permit Certificate will be marked for the Block Method, meaning that you completed all 32 hours of the course (13 levels) before receiving your DE-964 Permit Certificate and going to the DPS to get your permit.

The other certificate is the DE-964 License Certificate/Certificate of Completion. You’ll present this at your driving school as proof that you finished all 32 classroom hours online and to the DPS when you get your license.

The certificates are emailed to you by the end of the next business day if you finish by 1 PM CST Monday through Saturday. We do not process any certificates on Sunday. Print out your certificates from the email.

What is the progress log?

The Progress Log shows you when you started and completed a certain level and chapter.

Here’s an example of what the Progress Log looks like:

L = Level

C = Chapter

The points on the right are points that a student earned in a specific chapter. The points don’t count for or against you, and they don’t affect your level tests or final exam scores – they’re just for fun!

How do I take a practice test?

Practice tests are available for all Aceable Drivers Ed courses, not for Texas Defensive Driving or California Traffic School.

The practice tests consists of ten multiple choice questions. Students can take as many practice tests as they want at any point in the their course. The practice tests don’t count for or against you, and they don’t affect your level tests or final exam scores.

You can open up the menu and click on “Practice Tests” to take one.

How many levels or chapters do I have left?

To know how much you have left to go, check out the Table of Contents in the menu of your account.

The Table of Contents gives you an outline of your course and allows you to go back to levels, chapters, and pages you have previously completed so that you can review course material.

Anything you’ve done will be in black or blue. Anything you haven’t yet done will be slightly lighter in color or more transparent.

When you go to the Table of Contents, you’ll notice some letters followed by numbers. These letters and numbers stand for certain levels, chapters, and pages.

L = Level, C = Chapter, P = Page

For example, if you see L1 C2 P3, you are looking at Level 1, Chapter 2, Page 3.

This is what the Table of Contents looks like:

When you click on a level, it will expand to show you the chapters in that level.

When you click on a chapter, it will expand to show you the pages in that chapter.

When you click on a page, you’ll be brought to that specific page in the course and you can review content. You can only go to pages that you have already completed. You are not allowed to jump ahead in the course.
