Behind the Wheel

How do I complete 65 hours of behind-the-wheel practice?

You’ll need to complete 65 hours of behind-the-wheel practice with a licensed driver who is 21 or older or a parent, guardian, person in loco parentis, or spouse who is at least 18 years old and licensed with the same or higher class vehicle than appears on your permit. 10 of those hours must be done at night and 5 must be done in bad weather.

The Pennsylvania Driver License Center has an awesome Parents Supervised Driving Guide that will guide you through what you need to learn in the car. The guide recommends using the RoadReady app for iOS to track your driving hours. Unfortunately, they do not have an Android app at this time.

Where can I complete a behind-the-wheel training course?

Selecting the driving school where you’ll do behind-the-wheel instruction is a huge decision, and it’s important that you do your research beforehand. We suggest doing a quick Google search, such as “driving school + your zip code or city“.

Some things you should keep in mind are:

Cost – each driving school offers a 6-hour package but will also have flexible plans depending on how many lessons you want to do there. Each school charges differently, but the 6-hour package ranges between $200 and $700. Some places may even include the driving test at a high school in the End-of-Course Skills Testing Program or will drop you off at the nearest Driver License Center to take your driving test.

Location – How far is the driving school from where you live? How convenient is it for you to get to and from the driving school? How will you get there?

Schedule – Available instruction hours at driving schools vary and certain seasons are busier than others (such as summer). Does the class schedule work for you?

Reviews and ratings – What have other people said about the driving school you’re looking at? If the school has consistently received positive reviews and high ratings, maybe it’s a good idea to consider taking lessons there. Bad reviews from previous students may mean you should continue your search.

Can I drive alone with a permit?

No. Absolutely not! When you have your permit, you are only allowed to drive with these people in the front passenger seat:

  • A licensed driver at least 21 years of age
  • A parent or guardian
  • A person in loco parentis
  • A spouse who is at least 18 years of age and licensed with the same or higher class vehicle that appears on your learner’s permit

There aren’t any curfews since you are under the supervision of an adult.
